NiMet Predicts Sunny, Cloudy And Rainy Days Across Nigeria This Week

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a blend of sunshine, cloud cover, and rainfall across the country from Monday to Wednesday, warning Nigerians to take precautionary measures as thunderstorms with strong winds are expected in some regions.

In its three-day weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet said sunny skies with patches of cloud would dominate the northern region in the morning.

“Isolated thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected in Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Adamawa, Kebbi, and Kaduna by afternoon and evening,” the agency noted.

According to the outlook, the central region will have sunny skies with slight cloud cover during morning hours. However, the weather is expected to shift later in the day.

“Isolated thunderstorms and moderate rain are forecast over Plateau, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kwara, Nasarawa, and Niger,” NiMet stated.

The southern region will start off with cloudy skies, with morning rainfall likely in Akwa Ibom.

“This will be followed by thunderstorms and light to moderate rain in Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Edo, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Delta, Ekiti, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom,” the agency said.

For Tuesday, NiMet predicted light morning rains and thunderstorms over parts of Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, and Jigawa. Other northern areas will remain mostly sunny.

“Later in the day, moderate rainfall will affect Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, and Bauchi,” the forecast read.

Central states including the FCT, Benue, Niger, Kwara, Plateau, and Kogi will experience morning and evening thunderstorms with varying rainfall intensity.

In the south, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected by afternoon and evening, especially in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, and Edo.

On Wednesday, thunderstorms with light rain are expected over Kebbi, Zamfara, and Sokoto in the morning, while other northern states will see sunshine and cloud patches.

“By afternoon, moderate rain will spread across Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kano, and Kaduna,” NiMet said.

The central region will begin with sunshine intervals, shifting to moderate to heavy rainfall later in the day.

In the south, morning clouds will give way to intense thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in the afternoon and evening hours.

NiMet advised Nigerians to exercise caution during thunderstorms, especially as strong winds may precede rainfall.

“Secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy downpours, disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and stay away from tall trees,” the agency advised.

It also urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific forecasts from NiMet to aid safe flight planning, and encouraged the public to stay informed via its official website.
