More Bodies Recovered 14 Days After Devastating Mokwa Flood

Two decomposed bodies of individuals who fell victim to the catastrophic flood that affected Mokwa town, the administrative center of Mokwa Local Government Area in Niger State, on May 29, were recently retrieved.

Naija News recalls that the Mokwa flood submerged various structures and displaced numerous residents from their homes due to severe rainfall.

On Thursday, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Abdullahi Baba Arah, confirmed to Daily Trust that two more decomposed bodies have been recovered.

Arah stated that the bodies were located downstream from the bridge where the floodwaters had flowed, after a significant downpour on Wednesday eroded the sand dunes that had previously concealed the corpses.

“The 2 dead bodies were recovered today at the Downstream of the bridge. Yesterday’s rains that flowed along the water channel washed away sand dunes that covered the dead bodies. The bodies were decomposed beyond recognition,” he said.

The Niger State Government had said that no fewer than 700 people were still missing, while 207 others were confirmed dead from the disaster.

During the week, the Niger State Government announced that over 700 individuals are still unaccounted for following a recent flood disaster in Mokwa town, which serves as the headquarters of Mokwa Local Government Area.

The Governor of Niger State, Umar Bago, who Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba represented, made this announcement on Tuesday in Minna during a meeting with a condolence delegation led by Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, a former Chief Security Officer to the late General Sani Abacha.

As reported by the government, there have been 207 confirmed fatalities, and more than 3,000 households have been displaced.

The flood has also caused damage to approximately 400 houses, with 283 homes and 50 shops completely destroyed.

Governor Bago characterised the event as a national disaster and stated that the government is working in collaboration with professional organisations to investigate the underlying causes of the flooding.

Reports from assessments are still pending.

Major Al-Mustapha, who led a group of sympathisers from various parts of the country, indicated that their visit aimed to convey condolences and discuss strategies to prevent future occurrences.

He mentioned that the delegation would also engage with the traditional council in Mokwa.
