Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has weighed in on some of the standout Premier League fixtures taking place this weekend, offering his predictions ahead of a packed Matchday 5 schedule.
The Premier League action begins on Saturday with the Merseyside derby, as Liverpool host Everton at Anfield in the early kick-off. Later in the evening, Manchester United take on Chelsea in what is shaping up to be a crucial test for both sides.
The weekend then rounds off with a heavyweight showdown between Arsenal and Manchester City at the Emirates on Sunday.
Speaking to BetFair, Shearer tipped Liverpool to edge past their local rivals, pointing to their strong home form. “Liverpool v Everton. Tough one to call but Liverpool at Anfield, won four from four in the league without playing well and Isak made his debut on Wednesday in the Champions League, so I’ll go for a home win. Prediction: Liverpool win,” he said.
Turning to Old Trafford, the former England captain believes the clash between United and Chelsea could end evenly. “Man Utd vs Chelsea: Chelsea playing a tough game in the Champions League could help them, so I’ll go for a draw. Prediction: Draw,” Shearer added.
For the headline fixture of the weekend, Arsenal’s meeting with reigning champions Manchester City, Shearer predicted another stalemate. “Arsenal vs Man City: Arsenal were impressive last weekend and had a great win in the Champions League. These games are always incredibly tight, so I’ll go for a draw. Prediction: Draw.”
