Celebrated novelist Dame Jilly Cooper, famed for her raunchy romance novels and the iconic Rivals series, has died at the age of 88 following a fall, her family announced.
In a statement, her children Felix and Emily Cooper said, “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dame Jilly Cooper, DBE, who died on Sunday morning after a fall, at the age of 88.”
They added, “Mum was the shining light in all of our lives. Her love for all of her family and friends knew no bounds. Her unexpected death has come as a complete shock. We are so proud of everything she achieved in her life and can’t begin to imagine life without her infectious smile and laughter all around us.”
Cooper, a literary icon, sold more than 12 million books during her career, captivating readers with her witty, romantic, and often scandalous tales. Her novels, characterized by humour, glamour, and vivid characters, left a lasting mark on British literature.
She was widely celebrated not only for her literary achievements but also for her larger-than-life personality, charm, and generosity toward family and fans. Cooper’s death marks the end of an era in contemporary British romance fiction.
