Nigeria’s track star Tobi Amusan may have missed out on gold at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, but she will return home with a significant financial reward of $55,000 (about ₦82.5 million) after her silver-medal performance on Monday.
Naija News reports that Tobi Amusan, 28, clocked 12.29 seconds in the women’s 100 metres hurdles final to claim second place behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who shocked the field with a national record of 12.24s. American Grace Stark settled for bronze in 12.34s.
While Amusan’s time was not enough to repeat her 2022 triumph, her consistency at the global stage paid off handsomely. By finishing second, she secured $35,000 (₦52.5 million) from World Athletics’ prize pool. Added to that is a $20,000 (₦30 million) bonus from Nigeria’s official kit supplier Hiracer, which pledged podium rewards for athletes before the championships began.
Tonobok Okowa, president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, confirmed the sponsorship deal. “This company said they would give any gold medallist $30,000, silver medallist $20,000, and bronze medallist $10,000. So they should concentrate, work hard and try to win, and then they will win their money,” he explained.
That arrangement pushed Amusan’s total earnings from Tokyo to $55,000, a sum that highlights the growing incentives available to Nigerian athletes competing on the world stage. Beyond the financial boost, her medal also adds to Nigeria’s tally at the World Championships, marking the 12th in the country’s history.
