Details Of Atiku Abubakar’s Defection Journey In Nigeria Politics (See List)

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, officially left the party on Wednesday ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Naija News reports that Atiku communicated his decision to leave the main opposition party in a letter to the PDP Chairman, Jada 1 ward, Jada LGA, Adamawa State.

Atiku’s recent defection adds to his defection journey in Nigerian politics. See the list of parties he has defected to:

1. PDP to Action Congress (AC) (2006–2007)

Following a fallout with President Obasanjo over the contentious third-term bid in 2006, Atiku left the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to join the newly formed Action Congress (AC). He became the party’s presidential candidate in 2007, though he lost to Umaru Musa Yar’Adua of the PDP

2. AC to PDP (2009)

After internal disputes within the AC and a failed leadership bid, Atiku returned to his original political home, the PDP, in 2009. He aimed once more for the party’s presidential nomination in 2011 but lost to the incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan.

3. PDP to APC (2014–2017)

In February 2014, Atiku defected again—this time to the newly formed All Progressives Congress (APC). The move positioned him for a shot at the 2015 presidential ticket. He contested the APC primaries but was defeated by Muhammadu Buhari

4. APC to PDP (2017)

After becoming disillusioned with the APC government, Atiku returned to the PDP in December 2017. He secured the
party’s presidential ticket for the 2019 and 2023 elections but lost both to Buhari in sharply contested races

5. PDP to ADC (July 2025)

On 14 July 2025, Atiku officially resigned from the PDP, citing irreconcilable differences and dissatisfaction with the party’s trajectory

He has now aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), joining a coalition including Peter Obi and others ahead of a united 2027 presidential challenge
