US Issues Travel Warning For Citizens In Abuja

US Warns Citizens Against Travelling To Some States In Nigeria (Full List)

The United States Mission in Nigeria has raised a security alert for its citizens, warning against non-official visits to military and government facilities in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Naija News reports that the advisory, released on Sunday, follows rising global and domestic security concerns, prompting the embassy to take precautionary measures for its staff and American nationals in Nigeria.

In the new directive, the US government said all employees of the US Embassy in Abuja, along with their families, are prohibited from visiting Nigerian military sites or government buildings unless it is for official purposes.

The Mission stated that the move is part of “heightened caution” in response to recent global developments, although it did not specify the exact nature of the threats.

“All US Embassy employees and their family members are currently restricted from non-official visits to Nigerian military and government facilities in Abuja,” the statement read.

The advisory also urged American citizens living in or visiting Nigeria to exercise a high degree of vigilance, especially in locations frequented by westerners, expatriates, and government personnel.

“Stay alert in public places and be mindful of surroundings. Avoid large gatherings and limit unnecessary travel,” the embassy advised.

The mission also warned citizens to vary daily routines to avoid becoming predictable, familiarise themselves with emergency exits in buildings, and update personal safety plans.

Despite the increased restrictions, the mission confirmed that both the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain fully operational and available to assist citizens in need of consular services.

“The Consular Sections of the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain open and continue to provide assistance,” it stated.

In the same advisory, the US government encouraged its citizens in Nigeria to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) – a service that allows Americans abroad to receive timely alerts and emergency updates.
