Nigeria’s Super Falcons head coach, Justine Madugu, has released a 24-woman squad for the upcoming 13th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The Super Falcons are aiming to clinch a record-extending 10th continental title at the tournament set to take place in Morocco from July 5 to 26.
Leading the charge is team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, joined by key veterans such as goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, forward Francisca Ordega, and prolific striker Asisat Oshoala.
Also making the list are Saudi Arabia-based defender Ashleigh Plumptre, U.S.-based fan favourite Michelle Alozie, experienced defender Osinachi Ohale, and midfield generals Deborah Abiodun, Jennifer Echegini, and Christy Ucheibe. Halimatu Ayinde also makes a return to the midfield after a period out of the team.
Three home-based stars, goalkeeper Rachael Unachukwu, defender Sikiratu Isah and defender Miracle Usani, have been included, further strengthening the squad’s local representation.
The team began training in Abuja on Thursday and will continue their sessions through Saturday before flying to Lisbon, Portugal, on Sunday for the final phase of their preparations.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has lined up two high-profile friendly matches for the Super Falcons to fine-tune their tactics and chemistry. The team will face Portugal’s senior women’s national team on Monday, June 23, in Lisbon, and then clash with regional rivals Ghana on Sunday, June 29, in Morocco.
At the WAFCON tournament, Nigeria has been drawn in Group B alongside Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria. All group matches will be played at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca.
