The Bayelsa State Command of the Nigeria Police Force provided assurance on Sunday that measures are being taken to rescue Justice E.G. Umokoro, who was kidnapped by assailants reportedly wearing Police uniforms.
On Saturday evening, gunmen fired shots indiscriminately near Ekeki Motor Park to instil fear in the crowd and subsequently abducted Umokoro, taking him to an undisclosed location.
Naija News understands that the judge, who presides over Court 7 of the Bayelsa State High Court, was abducted at the Ekeki area of the city while in the company of his two daughters near the popular Kilimanjaro Eatery, adjacent to the bustling Ekeki Motor Park.
Multiple eyewitnesses had confirmed to Vanguard that Justice Omukoro had stopped at the eatery to buy a loaf of bread when masked men in black combat gear accosted him.
However, in a statement issued in Yenegoa on Sunday, the Commissioner of Police (CP) in Bayelsa, Francis Alonyenu, emphasised that the individuals who kidnapped the judge were not actual police officers, contrary to public belief.
Alonyenu further stated that Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa has instructed all security agencies to intensify their efforts to locate and rescue the judge, as well as to take firm action against the criminals responsible for the abduction.
“The Bayelsa Police Command is fussing efforts with other security agencies and reviewing video clips related to the event with different digital footage.
“We have well-formatted crime mapping sketches aiding ongoing law enforcement efforts being mustered in the rescue efforts.
“Guarantees are herewith given that this singular incident should not orchestrate any mistrust between the Bayelsa Public and security forces within the state.
“The support of Sen. Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State and the good people of the state, have enhanced our capacity and determination to ensure that the Justice is rescued unhurt,” the CP stated.
Alonyenu assured that security measures were being upscaled to drive the command’s law and order management strategies to find a solution to the incident.
“At this point, it is also essential to appeal to members of the public to desist from any attempt to obstruct or hinder ongoing measures put in place for the rescue of the Hon. Justice.
“We call on your support and understanding in this regard, please,” he added.
