The lawmaker representing the Bauchi Central Senatorial District, Abdul Ahmed Ningi, has demanded an investigation into reports that the federal government owes contractors for projects completed since 2024.
Sharing his concerns during Tuesday’s plenary, Ningi urged the upper legislative chamber to urgently mandate the committee on appropriation to find out why the payments were not made.
Naija News understands that there have been speculations that most contractors handling Federal Government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies’ projects have not been paid since October 2024.
The House of Representatives on May 8 summoned the governor of the Central Bank of Yemi Cardoso, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu and other top government officials over the development.
Speaking on the situation, Ningi insisted that the Senate give the committee on appropriations two weeks to report on the root cause of the problem.
He said, “Most of the constituency projects that I know of, almost 80 percent were completed six months before today.
“You begin to hear rumours that the minister of finance and the office of the accountant general are picking and choosing projects they will finance; this is not right.
“I think the committee on appropriation should be saddled with the investigation. Give them a mandate of two weeks to present a report before this chamber why what is happening is happening”.
