Manchester United will kick off their 2025-2026 Premier League campaign with a high-stakes home clash against Arsenal on Sunday, August 17, as manager Ruben Amorim seeks to silence the doubters after a woeful end to last season.
Manchester United are coming off their worst top-flight finish since their infamous 1973–1974 relegation, ending last season in 15th place.
Amorim, who took the reins in late 2024, oversaw just 24 points from 26 matches, a dismal return of 0.92 points per game, the worst ever over that stretch for any manager at a traditional ‘big six’ club.
Despite the pressure, United’s hierarchy has chosen to back the Portuguese tactician, starting with a £62 million move for Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha.
The 25-year-old will be tasked with reinvigorating a United attack that scored just 44 goals last season. Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike have also emerged as key targets in United’s ongoing rebuild.
Amorim will face a baptism of fire in the new season, with United’s first three games featuring Arsenal at home, Fulham away, and Burnley at Old Trafford.
Things escalate quickly from there, with a Manchester derby against City at the Etihad on September 13 and a visit from Chelsea a week later.
January could prove pivotal, with a home tie against Manchester City and a return fixture against Arsenal within seven days. United’s run-in is not much kinder, including April fixtures against Chelsea and Brentford, and the final three games coming against Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, and Brighton.
