JUST IN: INEC Releases Schedule For Anambra Guber Polls, Bye-Elections, Nationwide Voter Registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released a detailed update on forthcoming electoral activities, which include the scheduling of bye-elections, the resumption of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), and the preparations for the Anambra State Governorship election.

This is as the commission continued its series of regular consultative meetings with key stakeholders on the second day of engagements, involving leaders of registered political parties from across the nation.

In his introductory remarks on Thursday, the INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, announced that INEC has scheduled Saturday, August 16, 2025, for the conduct of bye-elections in 16 constituencies across 12 states of the federation.

According to him, these elections will encompass 3,553,659 registered voters across 32 Local Government Areas, 356 Wards, and 6,987 Polling Units.

The Commission intends to deploy 30,451 election officials for this exercise. However, the Commission indicated that bye-elections will not take place in Khana II State Constituency in Rivers State, due to the ongoing state of emergency, and in Talata Mafara South State Constituency in Zamfara State, due to a legal dispute concerning the declared vacancy by the State Assembly.

Professor Yakubu underscored the stringent timeline for conducting the bye-elections, highlighting that party primaries are scheduled to occur from July 17 to 21, 2025, while the submission of nomination forms through the INEC portal will commence at 9:00 a.m. on July 22 and conclude at 6:00 p.m. on July 26. Public campaigns are set to take place from August 2 to August 14, 2025.

Naija News reports that the INEC Chairman further disclosed that the Commission has sanctioned the resumption of CVR at two levels: state-specific and nationwide.

“In Anambra State, in preparation for the upcoming governorship election, CVR will be conducted in all 326 Wards from July 8 to 17, 2025, operating daily from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., including weekends.

“The window will allow new voters, those transferring registration, or seeking replacement of lost or damaged PVCs, to update their status. PVCs from previous exercises will also be available for collection at registration centres.

“On a national scale, online pre-registration will resume on August 18, 2025, followed by in-person registration on August 25, 2025, across INEC’s 37 states and FCT offices and 774 Local Government Area offices nationwide,” Yakubu noted.

Speaking at the meeting, the National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Alhaji Yusuf Dantalle, reaffirmed the council’s dedication to promoting electoral integrity and democratic governance.

“IPAC is unwavering in its commitment to fostering electoral integrity, political stability and inspiring trust in electoral governance,” Dantalle said.

He called upon stakeholders to maintain the integrity of the ballot and ensure that elected officials are held accountable, thereby reinforcing Nigeria’s democracy.

Dantalle emphasised the forthcoming Anambra Governorship election as an opportunity for INEC to demonstrate its technological advancements in election management, particularly through the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in electoral governance, aiming to promote transparency, mitigate risks, and increase voter participation.

He also praised INEC and the Federal Government for the ongoing development of the new headquarters annexe of the Commission, referring to it as a crucial advancement in enhancing INEC’s operational effectiveness.

The meeting was attended by National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, aides to the INEC Chairman, and Directors from various departments within the Commission.
