Tension gripped commuters and residents of Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State on Sunday evening as suspected gunmen attacked a Benue Links commercial bus, robbing passengers and abducting several victims into the nearby bush.
Naija News reports that the incident occurred at Eke community, along the Otukpo-Otukpa road, at about 6:30 pm, throwing the area into panic.
According to reports gathered by Daily Post, the attackers laid an ambush for the bus, which was conveying passengers and bore the registration number 14B-143BN.
The assailants reportedly intercepted the vehicle, dispossessed all occupants of their belongings, and dragged them into the surrounding forest.
It was gathered that the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State, Austin Agada, drove past shortly after the attack occurred. Witnessing the aftermath, he immediately alerted security operatives.
Following the alert, military and police personnel reportedly arrived at the location and commenced search-and-rescue operations.
Meanwhile, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), amid growing insecurity and recurring violence in Benue State, has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently refer the situation to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for investigation and possible prosecution of perpetrators.
The group made the demand in a letter dated June 21, 2025, signed by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare.
According to SERAP, the escalating killings and displacement of residents in Benue and other parts of the country constitute serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law, warranting the attention of the Hague-based court.
