Buratai commends opposition coalition, says Tinubu failed to meet expectations

According to Guardian, former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has publicly thrown his weight behind the emerging alliance between Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi. The retired general praised the opposition leaders for setting aside their political differences to work together, calling their unity a much-needed intervention in Nigeria’s current situation.

Buratai, speaking at a press briefing, said the alliance could be a turning point for the country. He stated, “The Atiku-Obi-Amaechi alliance represents a beacon of hope for many Nigerians who are disillusioned with the current state of affairs.”

This marks the first time Buratai has openly criticized President Bola Tinubu. Known for his previous support of the administration, Buratai did not hold back in pointing out where the government has failed, particularly in areas of economic management, national security, and governance.

According to him, the Tinubu-led administration has fallen short of the expectations many Nigerians had at the start of his tenure. Buratai made it clear that his stance was not out of bitterness but out of concern for the nation’s future. He noted that citizens are feeling the weight of worsening insecurity and rising economic hardship.  Touching on the security situation, Buratai said efforts by the government have been insufficient. He highlighted the resurgence of terrorist activities and increasing economic strain as interconnected problems that demand urgent and coordinated responses.

He called on Nigerians to pay close attention to the opposition coalition’s message and consider it a credible alternative. In his view, their coming together signals a new direction focused on unity and solutions.  Buratai’s endorsement of the alliance adds a new dimension to the political conversation, especially coming from a former military chief who once stood firmly behind the current government. His message to the public is clear: it’s time to support those who are willing to work together to rescue the country.
