He clarified that focusing solely on the most recent incidents would not accurately reflect the security situation in his constituency when he was questioned about it during the interview. “Some of the largest government forest reserves, which have been abandoned, are located in the forest areas connecting Garga, Kukawa, Dada, and surrounding locations,” he said. In 2022, he said, some young people organized and murdered seven bandits in one of the state’s forests, but the bandits regrouped and killed 147 in a retaliatory strike.

He went on to say, “Kanam Local Government was visited by the Plateau’s then-Governor, Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong. Everyone was in tears. In addition, only four of the 147 individuals killed were Christians. I made this statement because the narrative being developed in Nigeria is mostly intended for propaganda purposes. People talk to give the appearance that a certain community, constituency, or whatever is involved in a holy war.

He also stated that he wanted to make it very clear that neither the Christian nor the Muslim populations were the objective of the attack, nor was it religious in nature. Instead, the inhabitants of Kanam Local Government were attacked by bandits. He made it clear he did not consider the assailants to be Muslims. He clarified that the incident happened on a Sunday morning during the day, at around 7 or 8 a.m., and lasted for approximately three hours. Four of the casualties were Christians.

The bandits had already burned their village, and the victims were returning there after leaving their church. The four courageous young men in the group of roughly 19 Christians were singled out and executed by the bandits, who thought they were members of an enforcement group from nearby villages that had been formed to fend against the attacks.
