Numerous sources claim that Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, has called Nigeria’s growing poverty the worst disaster the nation has experienced since 1914. El-Rufai underlined the gravity of the country’s problems and the necessity of a coalition to restore Nigeria’s progress while speaking at the 60th birthday lecture of former Rivers State Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi in Abuja. “Nigeria is in its worst crisis since 1914,” he said. Nigeria has veered off course, so we are collaborating to form a coalition to get it back on course.

El-Rufai also spoke about the weaponization of poverty, arguing that if it is not handled, poverty itself turns becomes a weapon rather than politicians purposefully employing it as such. On his official X (Twitter) page, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s aide Lere Olayinka responded by criticizing El-Rufai. By bringing up the instability in Southern Kaduna under El-Rufai’s rule, Olayinka refuted the previous governor’s story and suggested that the nation was already facing significant problems.

“When Èsù kékeré òde was governor of Kaduna State, Nigeria was not in its biggest trouble, and people were being killed in Southern Kaduna on a daily basis,” he wrote. Although Èsù Kekeré òde has defected to the SDP, his son remains an APC member in the House of Representatives. Who is he lying to? Critics such as Wike’s aide refer to political inconsistencies and previous governance failures as contributing factors to the nation’s problems, while El-Rufai advocates for unity in tackling them.
