Image Source: Instagram Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, a former World Bank vice president and minister of education, has urged President Bola Tinubu to order the immediate reinstatement of security personnel for Kogi Central senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who was suspended.

This comes after the Attorney-General of the Federation filed criminal charges against Akpoti-Uduaghan for her remarks on national television, in which she claimed that Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello were involved in an assassination plot. The charges accuse Akpoti-Uduaghan of defamation following her April 3, 2025, interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

As a result of the senator’s accusations, her official police security detail was withdrawn and she was suspended from the Senate. Ezekwesili responded to these events by sending President Tinubu a strongly worded memo that was posted on her official X handle. In it, she denounced what she called “the latest act of State Capture” and a concerted effort to silence Akpoti-Uduaghan for making grave accusations against influential people.

“The Federal Government’s criminal charges against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan are an act of gross irresponsibility, illegality, and irrationality,” she claimed. This degradation of our democracy is your duty. Tinubu should “walk back from this latest scandal and terminate this egregious violation of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s rights immediately,” Ezekwesili said.

She also asked the president to order the Attorney General to drop the “frivolous and dangerous criminal charges” against the senator and penalize him. The immediate reinstatement of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s security detail, which was purportedly withdrawn on the Senate President’s orders—a move she characterized as “a petty act of retaliation, intimidation, and gross abuse of power”—is at the heart of Ezekwesili’s demands. “Direct the Inspector General of Police to promptly restore Senator Natasha Akpoti’s security staff that the Senate President ordered removed in a small-scale act of reprisal, intimidation, and flagrant abuse of authority against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan for the audacity to claim that he sexually harassed her,” she demanded.

Growing worries regarding the security of female parliamentarians and the stability of Nigeria’s democratic institutions have prompted Ezekwesili to step in. “It is a choice, and every choice has consequences,” she warned President Tinubu as she wrapped up her memo.
