Benue Killings: Tinubu Blasts IGP Over Failure To Arrest Perpetrators

Why We Are Building New Office For INEC - President Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has openly criticised the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, over what he described as the failure of the police to apprehend those behind the recent killings in Yelwata, a community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

During a stakeholders meeting in Makurdi on Wednesday, the President expressed dissatisfaction with the security response following the massacre that left over 100 residents dead and scores displaced.

Addressing the IGP directly, Tinubu questioned the absence of arrests despite the scale of the attack.

“Police (referring to the IGP), I hope your men are on alert to listen to information. How come no arrest has been made? I expect there should be an arrest of those criminals,” the President said bluntly.

He said it was unacceptable that such a heinous crime could be committed without the security agencies producing concrete leads or suspects.

The President also charged other top security chiefs, including Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, as well as the heads of the Air Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) to step up their game.

“Christopher, you have given much. I watch your comments, you can’t be tired of staying in the bush,” Tinubu stated, adding, “Oloyede and the Air Marshal, we thank all of you, but we need to keep our ears to the ground.”

He emphasised the importance of actionable intelligence and called for a retooling of Nigeria’s information gathering architecture.

“DG NIA, DG SSS, retool your information channels and let’s have tangible intelligence so that this will not occur again,” he added.

On his part, Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State appealed to the Federal Government to establish state police and create a special intervention fund to tackle the unending wave of violence in the state.
