Amuneke Urges FG To Hasten House Allocation To 1994 Super Eagles Heroes

Former Super Eagles winger, Emmanuel Amuneke, has called on the Federal Government to speed up the distribution of houses to the remaining members of the iconic 1994 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad.

Amuneke, who confirmed he had received his own allocation, urged the authorities to ensure that his teammates also get theirs without further delay.

“You mean the 1994 houses? I have received mine long ago,” Amuneke told The Punch. “They should hand over to the others now. Let them do it.”

His comments come as the Federal Government continues to fulfil its three-decade-old promise of house allocations to the historic squad, who brought glory to the nation by lifting Nigeria’s second continental title in Tunisia.

In a recent development, former Super Eagles striker, Efan Ekoku, received his housing allocation letter for a property in Abuja. The letter was presented to his niece, Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun, who represented him at a brief ceremony.

Pemi Temitope, Director and Head of the Department of Public Building and Housing Development, handed over the letter on behalf of the Minister of Housing and Urban Development. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to honouring the patriotic service of the 1994 squad.

Nwagbogun, speaking on behalf of Ekoku, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the gesture.

“I am deeply grateful to the Federal Government and the Ministry of Housing for fulfilling this long-standing pledge to my uncle. It is truly heartening to witness such commitment to integrity and follow-through,” she said.

“This gesture not only honours Mr. Efan Ekoku’s service but also restores faith in the value of public promises being kept.”

The housing pledge dates back to the aftermath of Nigeria’s historic triumph in Tunisia, where the Super Eagles defeated Zambia 2-1 in the final.

The team featured a golden generation of stars, including Amuneke, Ekoku, and others who etched their names into football folklore.

Though the promise lingered for decades, it was not until 2022 that former President Muhammadu Buhari approved the implementation of the housing allocation.

Allocations are currently being rolled out across various states, with some team members, like Ekoku, receiving houses in the Federal Capital Territory.
