ALGON Speaks On Nominating Wamakko As President Tinubu’s Running Mate For 2027

The Sokoto State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has dissociated itself from a recent proposal suggesting the nomination of Senator Aliyu Wamakko (APC – Sokoto North) as the vice-presidential candidate for President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Naija News reports that this clarification was provided in a statement released to the press in Sokoto on Monday by the State ALGON Chairman and Chairman of Tambuwal Local Government Area, Alhaji Abba Shehu-Tambuwal.

He emphasised that the remarks made by the ALGON Secretary and Chairman of Kebbe LGA, Alhaji Abdullahi Yarima, were solely his individual viewpoint.

“Our colleague, who also serves as our secretary, merely expressed his personal opinion, not the position of ALGON in Sokoto State.

“While he is entitled to his view like any other citizen, he acted independently and without consultation with the association,” Shehu-Tambuwal noted.

He elaborated on Yarima’s assertion, which hinted at Wamakko’s purported ambition for the Vice Presidency in 2027, characterising it as “unfounded and devoid of credibility.”

“Wamakko has not publicly expressed any intention to run for the office of Vice President, and it is therefore premature and inappropriate to speculate about such a matter,” he added.

The chairman also encouraged the public to disregard the assertion, emphasising the need for prudence and responsible discourse, particularly regarding sensitive national matters.

ALGON Sokoto State strongly cautions against baseless conjectures and emphasises the importance of verifying information before issuing public statements.

The citizens of Sokoto State and Nigeria as a whole deserve precise and accountable reporting, Shehu Tambuwal stressed.

He further urged ALGON members to avoid issuing unauthorised remarks and reminded them of the association’s official communication pathways for addressing the public on any issues of concern.

“Going forward, we urge all our members to respect our internal processes.

“The recent statement was not vetted by ALGON and should be disregarded by the public,” Shehu-Tambuwal concluded.

It will be recalled that Wamakko’s spokesperson, Abdallah El-Kurebe, had earlier issued a statement on Sunday, firmly distancing the Senator from any interest in contesting for the Vice Presidency in 2027.

El-Kurebe described the claim as “misleading, unauthorised, false, baseless, and highly irresponsible.”
