Former Governor of Benue State and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Gabriel Suswam, has declared that the emerging opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections will be a formidable force, urging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to brace for a serious challenge.
Naija News reports that Suswam made the remark on Wednesday while appearing as a guest on Politics Today, a programme aired on Channels Television.
The PDP stalwart said widespread discontent over the economic direction of the current administration was a key driving force behind the coalition.
Suswam said, “This is not the first time you are going to have a scenario such as this. Nigerians, based on the economic policies of this administration, are very dissatisfied. There is no Nigerian that is not affected… and so I believe that the coalition will be the party to beat.”
He further stated, “If I am in the ruling party, I should be worried about it.”
President Bola Tinubu, while on a visit to Nasarawa State on Wednesday, scoffed at the proposed coalition, branding its promoters as “internally displaced politicians”.
The President’s comment is seen as a direct jab at some disgruntled elements from both the APC and opposition camps coming together to form an alliance ahead of the next polls.
In his response, Suswam warned against dismissing the coalition too early, recalling how the then-ruling PDP had laughed off the formation of the APC prior to its 2015 electoral defeat.
He recalled, “We were doing the same thing when we were in government. We were dismissing APC then completely. People didn’t just give them any chance at all, but they won that election.”
Suswam further explained that the ruling party should be more concerned because many of its members were quietly aligning with the coalition, suggesting growing internal dissatisfaction within the APC ranks.
