A notable milestone in worldwide mental health research has been reached by Dr. Kennedy Oberhiri Obohwemu, a Nigerian mental health advocate and prominent researcher working in the UK. A new approach to comprehending emotional resilience and self-comforting behaviors is provided by Arewa PUNCH’s most recent article, which presents the Self-Comforting Attitude Theory (SCAT) and its related Self-Comforting Attitude Scale (SCAS). As per our correspondent, this innovation enhances his earlier highly regarded work, which included the Self-Comforting and Coping Scale and the Self-Comforting and Coping Theory. By combining these ideas and scales, a whole model that evaluates self-comforting behavior as well as perception is created, providing a better understanding of psychological resilience and emotional control.

Even though the two studies were submitted for peer review at about the same time, Obohwemu’s body of work is becoming more and more well-known worldwide thanks to the formal publication of the SCAT and SCAS in Mental Health & Prevention, an Elsevier peer-reviewed journal that is indexed in Web of Science and Scopus. The SCAT and SCAS look assess the attitudes and beliefs that affect a person’s propensity to practice self-comforting behaviors including emotional self-talk and mindfulness. In light of today’s environment of increased emotional stress and disparities in mental health, mental health practitioners, educators, and academics have embraced this discovery as a current and culturally flexible framework.

Dr. Obohwemu, who celebrated his historic achievement, stated that “the SCAT and SCAS provided an innovative framework for measuring how individuals perceive and evaluate self-comforting behaviors, which are internal strategies used to manage emotional distress.” Speaking further, Dr. Obohwemu, a lecturer at Oxford Brookes University, GBS Partnership, Birmingham, UK, added that “his lived experience during the COVID-19 lockdowns, which emphasised the importance of internal resources in managing emotional distress, inspired the research.” “In times of crisis, people frequently rely on internal resources to stay emotionally afloat,” he continued.

But whether or not people use those tactics primarily relies on how they see them—whether they consider self-comfort to be necessary or indulgent, weak or wise. “That is the goal of SCAT and SCAS, which are going to revolutionize emotional well-being.” According to Arewa PUNCH, the release of SCAT and SCAS completes a four-part conceptual framework called the Self-Comforting Framework, giving researchers and clinicians the means to assess the behaviors and mindsets that support emotional resilience. The increasing prevalence of mental health issues worldwide makes advances such as SCAT and SCAS both academically significant and vital from a human perspective.

Dr. Obohwemu is regarded as a significant voice in psychology science due to his expanding body of noteworthy research.
