Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has allegedly informally declared his intention to run against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, according to Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)..CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
In an interview with TVC, Pearse disclosed specifics of their private discussions and his involvement in rallying support for Makinde’s prospective presidential campaign. The National Support Group for Makinde for President in 2027 is actually organized by myself. I have received confirmation from Seyi Makinde that he will run against Tinubu and win. People are already lining up to support him because he said it,” Pearse added.
The PDP chairman pointed to initiatives in northern Nigeria as proof of the rising grassroots support for Makinde’s possible candidacy. “One northern faction was already putting up their posters in Kano. “So, these things are happening, and it’s a party issue,” he said. In response to a question concerning Makinde’s chances of winning, Dr. Pearse brushed off doubt and underlined how erratic politics can be. “This is politics, you see. No one can predict tomorrow. We’ll go over the procedure; he already has a ticket for his party. “I happen to be working for Makinde to emerge, whoever gets the ticket in PDP,” he clarified.
Pearse compared the present administration to its predecessor and said he was confident in the PDP’s ability to defeat the incumbent All Progressives Congress (APC). However, if Makinde is chosen as the PDP’s candidate, he will be up against the Tinubu administration, which is an APC holdover from the eight years under Buhari. He argued, “I believe we have a good chance of winning the election.” Concerns regarding recent PDP defections to the ruling party were also addressed by the party chieftain, who contended that elite departures do not accurately represent popular feeling.
He disputed claims that recent governor defections to the ruling party are weakening the PDP, arguing that only political elites are changing parties and that regular people are sticking with the opposition. Pearse cited the experience of former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as proof that the public is resistant to elite-driven party switching, asserting that Okowa encountered opposition from the community when he tried to rally support for the APC. Pearse claims that despite the flood of high-profile defections, the PDP is still supported by the majority, indicating a gap between the choices made by political leadership and the preferences of the general public.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
