He has a straightforward requirement: he must lead the ticket or else he will be removed. This position coincides with continuing negotiations to build a strong coalition under the leadership of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Heavyweights like Rotimi Amaechi, Babachir Lawal, Abubakar Malami, Nasir Elrufai, and former Kogi State Governor Idris Wada are joining the coalition.
In the upcoming general elections, they hope to form a cohesive front powerful enough to take on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The coalition gained momentum at a high-level meeting held in Abuja under the auspices of the National Political Consultative Group (NPCG), and talks to make the African Democratic Congress (ADC) its official platform are already under way. Final decisions are anticipated in a few weeks, according to ADC Chairman Ralph Nwosu.
Peter Obi continued to declare his allegiance to the Labour Party, but after attending the conference, controversy sprang up. Obiorah Ifoh, the party’s spokesperson, called his actions “unacceptable” and “confusing,” emphasizing that LP will not combine before 2027. Obi is still the most important person in the Obidient Movement. According to Dr. Katchy Ononuju, his political strategist and ally, the movement will only back Obi if he runs for president. “He takes the lead, or we go.” Ononuju said, “Obi cannot play second fiddle.”
It is widely acknowledged that Obi’s impact cannot be understated. He is seen by many as the opposition’s greatest chance because of his enormous youth base and grassroots support, which startled the country in 2023. Maduabuchi Idam, a human rights attorney, sees Obi’s coalition move as a strategic move to maintain competitiveness in a system that is likely to thwart his development.
