During a Symfoni TV media program, Atiku acknowledged the emotional toll of seeing the educational disaster that is plaguing northern Nigeria (especially in a region that was formerly known for its academic excellence).

The former vice president shared a sad story of his travel from Katsina airport to Daura, emphasizing the stark contrast between the region’s educational history and its current situation. When I visited President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura recently, I was so moved that I felt like crying. “Upon my arrival at Katsina airport, I observed a significant presence of Almajiris along the route from Katsina to Daura, numbering anywhere from 20 to 40, and even larger groups on the road,” Atiku reported.

He drew attention to the terrible irony of seeing such a lack of focus on education in an area that had formerly produced Nigeria’s founding leaders. “This location was once the Katsina College, the alma mater of all our first republic leaders.” At the moment, it serves as the primary residence for all Almajiris in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. “Until I travelled to Daura and returned to the airport, ladies and gentlemen, these are indeed significant matters,” Atiku stated to the crowd.

The presidential contender made it clear that the issue of education goes beyond the difficulties that are being faced now and would impact generations to come. These concerns extend beyond our personal lives and encompass the futures of our children and grandkids. “See, I live my life” was a common statement I used with my kids. Thank goodness it’s you and their kids that are impacted. His statement, “We must confront these challenges with utmost seriousness now,” was resolute.

In his capacity as vice president, Atiku described his previous attempts to resolve the educational problems in northern Nigeria while serving under President Olusegun Obasanjo.

He backed up his assertions with his experience as vice president. “The North has lagged in education for a considerable period.” The President was there with me. Specifically, I said, “I would like to establish an educational panel that will focus on our states.” Atiku asserted that a group was formed under the guidance of a foreign economist who created a blueprint. All of the governors of the northern states received his invitation to Kaduna, where he presented those implementation templates.

The former vice president emphasized important educational initiatives that were implemented during his administration, including the Universal Basic Education program. In addition to enacting the Universal Basic Education (UBE) bill, we also made education mandatory for all Nigerian children, guaranteeing free education from elementary school through high school. We imposed a levy on the cost of education. It is our responsibility to collect this tax. Informing us, “We pass this tax on to the states,”CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
