Despite opposition within his own party, Atiku’s decision, which is commonly seen as a declaration of political hostilities, shows his resolve to continue forward with a coalition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Atiku purposefully avoided meeting Governor Adeleke and the Osun PDP leadership during his visit for the coronation of Oba Adesuyi Haastrup, the new Owa of Ijesaland, because he feels that only a broad-based alliance can defeat the APC in the general election of 2027.
Rather, he made a courtesy call to Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the former governor of Osun and a longtime APC leader. The former vice president’s activities, according to PDP sources, have deepened the division between him and the party’s governors, who recently rejected any merger with other parties and insisted that the PDP is still powerful enough to regain power on its own.
To handle internal party concerns, a reconciliation committee led by former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki was established; however, Atiku’s actions seem to completely circumvent the procedure. He drew the line of battle. He’s sending a strong message that our governors oppose this alliance idea,” a party official at the PDP national secretariat told The Nation.
The reason for Atiku’s lackluster reception in Osun is thought to be Adeleke’s indifferent attitude toward the alliance and the mounting misgiving that the governor might not support his 2027 goal. Adeleke and PDP supporters were allegedly taken aback by his decision to disregard protocol and circumvent the state government. “He didn’t meet with the party chairman or any state executives, nor did he notify the state government of his visit,” a senior government source claimed. He chose to support Aregbesola instead. “The message is very clear,” the person continued.
The governor’s poor reception of Atiku in Osun is believed to be primarily due to Adeleke’s conflicted feelings about the coalition and growing concerns that the governor might not back Atiku’s 2027 objective. Both Adeleke and PDP supporters reportedly expressed surprise at his decision to defy convention and avoid the state administration. A top government source claims that “he did not notify the state government of his visit, nor did he meet with the party chairman or any state executives.” Instead, he took Aregbesola’s side. According to the insider, “The message is very clear.”
Adeleke’s ambivalent attitude toward the coalition and mounting misgivings that the governor might not support Atiku’s 2027 goal are thought to be the main causes of the governor’s lackluster reception of Atiku in Osun. According to reports, both Adeleke and PDP supporters were taken aback by his choice to disregard tradition and circumvent the state government. According to a senior government source, “he didn’t meet with the party chairman or any state executives, nor did he notify the state government of his visit.” He sided with Aregbesola instead.
